Side shaping and a compound raglan yoke create a flattering fit in this popular design, infamous since a group of friends in America each made one to wear to Rhinebeck and were subsequently featured on Ravelry’s home page in glorious technicolour! (See the ravelry pattern page for photos.)

The pattern is written in 14 sizes, for 32 to 58 inch chests, with 5 to 7.5cm/2 to 3 inches of positive ease. You will need 7 colours of a sportweight yarn with approximately 350 metres (382 yards) per 100g. The pictured sample was made in Rowan Felted Tweed DK – see the table below for number of 50g balls required in each colour using this yarn. Tension/gauge is 29 sts and 31 rounds per 10cm/4″ in stranded pattern after blocking.

The project involves steeking, allowing the whole cardigan to be knitted in the round from the right side. This steek is fully instructed in the pattern, which includes illustrated tutorials for my favourite steek reinforcement method as well as for the increase methods used for the shaping.

The hedgerow pattern is also available in Stranded Knits, a superb technique manual and pattern collection that I created for Rowan Yarns. See ‘Books’ for purchase options.
