Inspired by a picture of Marie Wallin’s stall at Fibre East, I recently went hunting for some wooden hat stands for my display at Yarndale. For years I’ve been using some plastic ones that are great as light and very portable display options, yet I’ve never been totally satisfied with them. There is lots of space between the four spokes that form the head shape, so I find it diffucult to make hats look rounded on them, as they would on actual heads. I didn’t know there were such things as wooden hat stands on legs! Happily a search after seeing Marie’s picture turned up some vintage examples, and I was able to commission a woodturner to make me some in a beautiful honeyed oak finish.
