Ann Kingstone’s Knitting School
Up until the time of the industrial revolution my beloved county of Yorkshire had many knitting schools. Young
children were sent to them to learn the basics of knitting, a skill which was vital to the British economy over many
hundreds of years when we exported knitted goods made from British wool to foreign countries far and wide. The advent
of machine knitting saw the end of these schools, and hand-knitting became a money-saving rather than a money-making
occupation for most folk.
Nowadays handknitting is primarily a creative hobby, loved by folk the world over who take great pleasure in making
beautiful and useful things from yarn. Handknitting is no longer even a money-saving activity as machine-knitted goods
are generally much cheaper to buy than the yarn for handmade equivalents. And today’s handknitting enthusiasts love to
knit with luxurious and expensive yarns. We even collect them to the extent that our homes are full of them, and we have
to find devious ways to hide our prolific yarn purchases from our nearest and dearest. ;o)
Now I present to such knitters a new knitting school — an online place of learning for you my fellow knitters where you
can learn and advance your knitting skills. I aim to enthuse, inspire, and encourage you to knit those things that you
currently feel you cannot do; those beautiful yet scary projects you so wish to create; the Shetland Shawls, the Fair Isle
socks, the steeked pullovers, and the intricately cabled hats of your dreams. Come with me on an adventure of learning…
